Seniors Div2

23/24 season

Seniors Div2 Report 10/12/23

This weekend saw the seniors back in action at Colchester again. Three encounters with Colchester, ECU and Letchworth Blues.

Colchester were up first, and points for the win already in the bag as this was a “guest” Colchester team. All the same, both teams really wanted to win this. The scorpions came out the right side of a hard fought match with a 2-1 win. Goals from Harry Southgate, and England Female U17, Ruby Fraser.

Next up was a return match with ECU Male team. Having lost 9-1 at the last encounter, the Scorpions were determined to come out better off this time around, and with some determined defending, so it proved, a loss again, but only 4-1 this time, ECU knew they had been in a match! The solitary goal coming from Harry Southgate

The final match for the scorpions, was a return match against Letchworth Blues. Again, a very hard fought match with the game ebbing and flowing all the way through. Both teams giving absolutely everything which was reflected in the final score, 4-4. Goals this time from Jack Baker (3) and Ruby Fraser.

The whole team put in another herculean effort today, none more so than Konnor Lee, and were well worth the 3 points won. With 2 tournaments to play, and all to play for, the Scorpions have almost three months to work on their game to be even harder to beat before their next tournament at Lynnsport on March 10th.

With thanks to sponsors Eastern Frames and special thanks to Skaters at Walpole Highway. Thanks to Nev Davis for being our ref for the day again.

Seniors Div2 Tournament report Sunday the 26th of November saw the senior scorpions at their second tournament at Letchworth. With a full squad, and a 100% record to defend, the scorpions were laying 4th in the league with quite a few games in hand over most of the teams around them.

1st match was against Letchworth whites. This was a hard fought match that was very close. The Scorpions went behind but soon levelled only to go behind again. Again the Scorpions rallied hard and levelled, 2-2. 2more goals saw them go 4-2 up but Letchworth came back at them to bring it to 4-3 ensuring a nail biting finish, but they held on for the win.

Goal scorers were Harry Southgate (2) Jack Baker and Ruby Fraser.

` 2nd match was against Ely and Chesterton United (ECU) males and proved to be a much more difficult match, conceding 2 very quick goals and a 3rd to short order thereafter. The scorpions seemed to struggle with stopping ECU getting through the defence to score at the back post. Something to work on back in training. Despite ECU giving them a tough game, their heads never dropped and carried on to the bitter end. Scorpions had several scoring chances of their own but just couldn’t seem to find the net apart from a solitary goal from Harry Southgate again. The 100% record ended with a 9-1 loss.

The 3rd match and final match of the day was against a very experienced Cambridge and Cottenham (CCRHC) team. CCRHC had been playing really well all day so this was going to be no walk in the park. With heads reset from the previous match, the scorpions fought hard in what turned out to be a game of margins. The score ended up as a 4-2 loss with Jack Baker scoring 2 plus an unfortunate own goal. There were many positives from this game being even tighter than the score suggested, but CCRHC’s superior possession won them the day. The day ended dropping to 5th in the league but still having 4 games in hand on all but 1 of the 4 teams above them. With thanks to hosts, Letchworth RHC Sponsors Eastern Frames and special thanks to Skaters of Walpole Highway and Neville Davis for being our Referee

CLEAN SWEEP FOR START OF SEASON!!

Tournament Report 24/9/23

Skaters scorpions got their senior campaign underway this Sunday with an away tournament hosted by Colchester Roller Hockey Club.

The first match saw them against Letchworth Blues, one of the favourites for the seasons honours. Early on, a goal from Mikey Whiting got the scorpions under way, followed up by another goal from Jack Baker. Despite a torrid second half, with Letchworth throwing everything at them, the scorpions ran out 2-0 winners.

Their second match saw them up against Ely and Chesterton United Girls, a strong team with slick movement on and off the ball. ECU took an early lead, but the scorpions held their nerve to eventually run out 4-2 winners with goals from their captain, U17 England Girls, Ruby Fraser, and Jack Baker.

Their final match of the day paired them up against hosts Colchester. Again the scorpions went behind, quickly equalising before going behind again. Despite seemingly going off the boil for a bit, they came back strong putting 10 past the hosts to run out 10-6 winners. Scorers Ruby Fraser, Konnor Lee, Cameron Fraser, Jack Baker (3), Mikey Whiting (4)

All of this despite having player/coach Harry Southgate missing so only one outfield sub, and the 2nd keeper Ian Oselton embarking on his first tournament season, the scorpions found their sting!!

22/23 season

The Senior team opened their account at the weekend Oct 2nd in the ECRHA Division2 league.

The squad is very much a young developmental squad in their first season together.

The tournament kicked off with a tight match against a young Ely and Chesterton United (ECU) team.

Skaters were 3-2 up at around halfway through the second half, only to run out 5-3 losers.

The second match was against a determined Cambridge and Cottenham team, but Skaters took an early lead against the run of play, and managed to hold on to that lead, adding a second late on.

The final match of the tournament against the well established Letchworth A. The Scorpions put up a brave display but ran out 6-0 losers. Plenty of positives to take away from the tournament and the first points on the board.
